How it works
Three steps, one coffee.
- 1
The export
The .xml file WordPress makes under Tools → Export, with all content. Read right here, in your browser.
- 2
The review
A report of anything that needs a look, every post before and after, and the whole project as files.
- 3
The Astro project
A zip with your content and images. It builds the first time.
npm install && npm run dev
Before and after
Clean Markdown, not a copy of the HTML.
Gutenberg blocks, classic posts and shortcodes become readable Markdown. Captions, galleries, tables, code and embeds keep working. What can’t be converted is listed, never dropped in silence.
- Gutenberg blocks
- Classic editor
- [caption] and [gallery]
- YouTube and Vimeo
- Page builders, reported

What you get
A real Astro site, not a folder of files.
Content collections
Posts and pages as Markdown with typed front matter, plus authors, categories and tags.
Your images, optimized
Downloaded next to the posts that use them, so Astro resizes and compresses them.
The same URLs
WordPress permalinks kept, and redirects for old links like /?p=123 and /feed/.
SEO carried over
Titles and descriptions from Yoast, Rank Math and All in One SEO. Sitemap, RSS and robots.txt.
A fast, plain theme
Archives, pagination, dark mode and optional Pagefind search. Easy to restyle or replace.
Ready for AI agents
AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and a task list of what is left, each item with its file.

Questions
Is my content uploaded anywhere?
No. The export is read and converted in your browser. When you download the project, images are fetched from your site, through marklean’s image proxy if your site blocks direct downloads.
I can’t get an export file. What now?
Connect to the live site instead: enter its address, and marklean reads the published posts and pages through the WordPress REST API. Add a username and an application password to also get drafts, menus and the original blocks. The password goes only to your site.
Will my URLs and search rankings survive?
Posts and pages keep their WordPress URLs, and old link formats redirect to them.
Does it keep my theme’s look?
No. You get a clean, fast starter theme to make your own. Content moves; the WordPress theme stays behind.
What about Elementor, Divi or WooCommerce?
Page builder text and images are kept and the layout is flagged in the report. WooCommerce products and other custom post types get their own pages, with prices and custom fields. Cart and checkout stay behind: a static site can’t take orders.
I don’t use Astro. Can I still use marklean?
Yes. Choose Hugo, Eleventy, Jekyll or plain Markdown before converting. You get your content, images and redirects with front matter for that tool, and you can rename fields or leave them out.
Is it really free?
Yes, and open source under the MIT license. The project it makes is yours, with no marklean code in it.
